A spontaneously opened rift along the Pyrenees is what caused the physical separation of the Iberian Peninsula and, floating across the Atlantic, it drifted away from the rest of Europe. This is the story of “La balsa de piedra” (The Stone Raft), the work published in 1986 by José Saramago, where he reveals the authorities who changed sides, just like a raft adrift. This is the name Andrea Mufatto and Gerardo Michelini have given to one of their most acclaimed wines. A Burgundy-style white wine made from different sites in Tupungato, a favourite of this pair of winemakers who strive to discover unique terroirs and showcase them at their best.

Made from the best plots in the Tupungato area, Michelini i Mufatto Balsa de Piedra Semillón is a white wine made from vines over 100 years old. Old Semillón vines planted in sandy and stony loam soils and cultivated in a respectful way. When the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested by hand. In the winery, the grapes ferment spontaneously on the skins with native yeasts. The wine is then aged for 6 months in 500 litre barrels.

Just as Saramago’s book has been translated into more than 20 languages and even adapted for the screen, the Michelini family presents Michelini i Mufatto Balsa de Piedra Semillon, a very clever interpretation of a unique terroir that has won over the whole world. A superb wine from the Uco Valley that is pure spontaneity and showcases Tupungato in its most natural state.

Ripe exotic nose with pineapple, yellow pear, guava, but also a stony undertone.
On the palate with nice breadth but also fresh acidity. Juicy, ripe yellow fruit with a cool herby finish. Nice energy & length.
